About The Prostate Health Improvement Program (Mr PHIP)

What is Mr PHIP?
Mr PHIP is a prostate health education program for men and their families attending the Repatriation General Hospital, Daw Park, South Australia. It was funded by the South Australian Department of Human Services, for the period 1996-99, and included the production of prostate cancer education materials, and a prostate cancer advisory service. Because of a strong demand, these services have been made available much more broadly and the information materials have been published on this World Wide Web site.

Mr PHIP educational materials
The Mr PHIP kit of educational materials was conceived when our consumer reference group asked for information which was delivered 'at the right time, in the right amount', ie information which was relevant to them at the time, and which was not overwhelming. Our General Practitioner (GP) reference group asked for resource materials which highlighted patient information which was important at each stage of the disease. As a result, the information kit provides information relevant to men at 5 different stages, listed below, and a resource list for finding further information.

Information Sheets produced by Mr PHIP Project:
1. Prostate cancer: Should I be tested?
2. Prostate Cancer: Interpreting the PSA test
3. Prostate cancer: After the diagnosis
4. Prostate cancer: Recurrence after treatment
5. Prostate cancer: Hormonal therapy
6. Prostate cancer: Useful resources

Each sheet can be viewed on this site, or downloaded as a PDF file for offline viewing or printing.

About the information sheets
The information sheets were developed by the Urology Unit at the Repatriation General Hospital, in consultation with men who live with prostate cancer, their families and friends. In addition other health professionals and community agencies, notably the Cancer Council have contributed in a major way to their production. We are grateful to all of these individuals and organisations who have been so generous with their time and willingness to assist.

The PHIP Team
The PHIP team includes Dr Alan Stapleton (Urologist), Mrs Sue Boxhall (Nurse Adviser), Mrs Marg Southwell (Clinical Nurse Consultant, Urology), Rev Barry Oakley (Consumer adviser), Dr Carole Pinnock (Project Coordinator), Ms Allison Larg (Project Officer), Mrs Jane Frankham of the AntiCancer Foundation, Mrs Jan Paterson of the Continence Foundation of Australia and Ms Esther Tennant of the Royal District Nursing Society.
